Overview

What happens when work, family and mental illness collide,
particularly in uncertain economic times?

We know that mental illness costs the Canadian economy an estimated $51 billion in disability claims and absenteeism annually. We also know that having a friend or family member with mental illness - whether it is a friend, coworker, spouse, sibling, child, or aging parent - can present challenges to the even the healthiest of employees.

Bottom Line 2009 will look at the workplace mental health in a broader social context and include perspectives from family members when their loved one has a mental illness and is in the workforce, from the employee when they are caring for a family member with mental illness, and from employers. The one-day conference will explore latest research and innovative resources available to enable employers, employees and family members with mental illness to access the help they need. Special attention will be paid to added pressures created by today’s unique economic conditions.
